  • Maureen Alsop says:

For a twisted freefall into shared loneliness, Eric Baus’ Turned Droves gives us a sideways glance and ricochets into a triple somersault. If a collection of poetry were to hold musical accompaniment, the contemplative love triangle of Leonard Cohen’s “Famous Blue Rain Coat” quietly swells (“You’re living for nothing now…What can I tell you my brother, my killer/What can I possibly say?”) as if from micro-speakers in Edward Hopper’s New York Office wherein the winsome if not pl [...]

The To Sound was merely a Bausian blueprint, but with Tuned Droves we get the action and result of architecture. Although divided into sections the book has many concrete words which appear throughout the book. The bird from one section may be a different bird but this bird makes you think of a previous bird and a future bird and somewhere there are tongues and throats-- words like windows at once blackened or sunblind or reflecting back only distorted. This book arranges and deranges senses and [...]

I really like this book. I wasn't sure at first, but I think the language and how it's interacting with itself and with the reader has to have time to build. The music in the lines--sound and rhythm both--is rendered so concisely throughout that even when a line doesn't make linear sense, it nonethless holds enough sense in its music that you must trust it. The poems seem in many ways to be about the way the language and meaning work and come to work through use and accumulation, all taking plac [...]

I bought this book after seeing Baus read with Dorothea Lasky at the Penn Book Center in West Philly. It was a great reading, both were incredible people, and like all Octopus Books, the book itself is a friggin glory. I read this on the subway ride home, as well as sitting on a bench eating a fairly sublime cheese sandwich with jalapeno peppers, and Baus' sly surrealism was like a contrapuntal backbeat to Philadelphia in general. I can't really imagine reading him elsewhere, under the circumsta [...]

  • Trevor says:

Eric Baus’ latest book is a perceptual transmission, a linguistic reengineering, and a phenomenal cartography of a wild borderland both innocent and amoral. Reading these poems, with lines like “The bee’s stinger is like an enclosed, dark tongue. The atonal tortoise is a kind of dictionary in reverse,” reminds me of the often overlooked linkages between the world’s contents and their connection, as well, to language and thus thought. Eric Baus’ poetry refreshes the world and makes it [...]

i feel odd giving this book a rating. this whole star-like-love sort of scale simply doesn't apply. i found it interesting, if a bit puzzling. the language is interesting, espcially in its relentless disconnections. i think what struck me most was an odd sense of joylessness. to me, the book was utterly flat. again, all i can say is: interesting.

  • John Allen says:

Eric Baus' collection, "Tuned Droves", is akin to a study in miniaturist language art--not minimalist, miniaturist--taken to it's highest degree of potency, one cabinet parcel opening after another onto poetic marvels which are molecular. You'll read this book and a few days later start understanding things in new ways. Superb.

  • Nicole says:

Reallya 3 and a half.I did enjoy itI think overall its not amazing but there is a lot of amazing things in here. Lines, stanzas, ideas. I did like it a lot but it falls short of a 4 simply because I feel like it could be more.

  • Brigitte says:

A beautiful book. Baus at his best. See my review in the next issue of O & S.

  • Sarah Heady says:

Hot fuck. This book nauseates me, but in a wonderful way.

  • James Grinwis says:

Even better than the elusive salvos of The To Sound, the elegant though hard-hitting charges of Tuned Droves was definitely exciting.
