Book Info: Genre: Urban FantasyReading Level: AdultRecommended for: fans of urban fantasy, those looking for a female-lead urban fantasy with less romance and more actionBook Available: June 4, 2013 in Kindle and Paperback formatsTrigger Warnings: murder, violenceMy Thoughts: This is the second book in the Scarlett Bernard series, following Dead Spots, which I read and reviewed (linked where allowed) in March, 2013.One interesting thing about the style of these books is that the point of view go [...]

<2Trail of Dead managed to be an incredible boring read with a even more annoying heroine. I found Dead Spots likeable, but not that great. ToD was a book I almost DNFed. I accused Scarlett to be too much of a victim in book 1. Well, she didn't grow an inch. She actually reverts even more into YA territory, making her really unbearable. She's dumb, she's stupid, she's whiny (WHINY). She can't think beyond her "range". It's unbelievable. Her brother has already been used as an hostage, again h [...]

Trail of Dead is very similar to its predecessor, Dead Spots. That is, on the one hand, it's a fast, enjoyable read that I stayed up late to finish and, on the other hand, it retains pretty much all the same flaws and foibles that annoyed me about the first book. Indeed, in terms of Scarlett and her relationships with women, I feel like there was a step backwards, especially with Molly, Scarlett's roommate. A part of me wants to handwave this as consequences/damage from the last book, i.e. (view [...]

3.5 starsI wanted to give this book higher rating, because I really liked the plot (Olivia teaming up with the unknown witch, Golem, murders, etc), but I was so sick of Scarlett that I couldn't bring myself to give it 4 stars. In the first book, I liked Scarlett, but in this one, I just wanted her to drive off a cliff and die peacefully without complicating everyone's lives.1) Eli - Eli does absolutely nothing wrong in this book, yet Scarlett treats him like a trash, barely even looks at him and [...]

Enjoyed this book even more than the first. These books are well written and edited, and the series is free with Kindle Unlimited! I'm immediately on to the next book!

  • Jeanny says:

Either the protagonist is shortsighted or ignorant. Is she's not familiar with basic Physics: Newton's Third law? Certainly she's not naive. She can't possibly make a decision like changing every cell & a character's whole existence lightly can she? I suspect she did.

  • Erin ☕ *Proud Book Hoarder* says:

I wasn’t blown away by the first book, but I found in enjoyable in a few spots so decided to try again and see if I warmed up more to the characters in its sequel. While the mystery is a little lackluster, the story isn’t a bad follow-up to the first. I probably enjoyed it more simply because I did thaw to the characters some. Tossing in the nemesis Olivia and having it tied in with Scarlett’s past and what she’s discovering about herself helped, and of course I enjoyed that she is starti [...]

Trail of Dead by Melissa F. OlsonRelease date: June 4, 2013 | Series: Scarlett BernardThis is the second book in a new series, but don’t worry as this can be read as a stand-alone. The author goes through great pains doing a lot of rehashing, especially with the main characters.I did expect some character growth with this novel, unfortunately that did not happen. If anything, Scarlett has taken a bit of a trip backwards on the self-doubt train and is constantly bemoaning about her life and her [...]

Trail of Dead picks up a couple of months after the events in Dead Spots. Since then, Scarlett has been trying to find answers. She returns home only to be cornered at the airport by Jesse, the human LAPD officer who helped her with the last case. He's got another crime scene to show her and he wants answers. She's been gone and hasn't had a chance to check in with Dash, Will, or Kirsten since landing, so she doesn't have much to offer. But, at the scene, it is clear that someone's cleaned it an [...]

Another great novel in the Scarlett Bernard series! I really enjoy Scarlett and the very peculiar power she wields. It's unlike any other urban fantasy out there nowadays and I find it a welcome relief. While there's still the requisite vampires, werewolves and witches, Scarlett is in a league of her own as one of the only people in the world capable of completely cancelling out magic by just standing in the same room as the caster. I did have a few problems with this book though and most of it [...]

Olson's Trail of Dead picks up a few months after the ending of the first book in the Scarlett Bernard series. Scarlett returns to Los Angeles after spending some time with another null in New York trying to learn more about her powers. Detective Jesse Cruz is waiting for her at the airport to take her directly to a crime scene for her analysis. It turns out that Olivia, Scarlett's crazy mentor turned vampire, is putting her plan in motion killing two witches and a human couple with the same fir [...]

I liked the mystery a lot better in this book that the other, but for some reason (I still think its the narrator) I found my mind wandering and having to rewind.

Competent and imaginative if suffering from a few situations of unbelievable character actions, and a love triangle that I know is ongoing even into the next spin off that features the MC.

I liked this world, I liked the characters, I liked the plot, but I didn't like the relationships. (view spoiler)[ I think it was a personal thing though, b/c I hate love-triangles with a passion (of a thousand fiery suns). This one wasn't as bad as some I've read, but it's still on the event horizon, so to speak.I know I'm supposed to like the cop, and on his own, yeah, he's fine, but I'm just not seeing the main character and the cop together. *shrug* I can't put my finger on it exactly, but I [...]

So much going onIt's crazy how much happens in this story. Crazy Olivia has friends and they're willing to kill anyone in their way. It didn't take long for Scarlett, Jesse and the gang to figure out Olivia was behind the murders. The problem was all the misdirection and Psycho stuff that was going on. No one could figure out her end game because she wasn't alone. Scarlett is still dealing with a love triangle which sucks and of course Olivia the vampire isn't helping. I enjoyed this book and wi [...]

  • Rob Blackwell says:

If you enjoy urban fantasy, these are the books for you. Olson does a terrific job continuing to build her world and using familiar monsters -- vampires and werewolves -- in unfamiliar ways. As in "Dead Spots," the best part is the focus on Scarlett and her powers as a "null," someone who can cancel out the powers of vampires, werewolves and witches. Scarlett is both very likable and flawed, making her approachable and easy to root for. And the villain was excellent. I can't wait to see what hap [...]

  • Jenne says:

4.5This was really good! It kept me sitting on the edge of my seat throughout most of the book. It's such an awesome ensemble of characters. Even the bad guys are interesting. The big showdown almost seemed like it concluded the story arc. I have no idea where book 3 can go. I'm curious to see what Ms. Olson has in store for Scarlett and company now. This book was cram packed full of action and I loved every second of it!

  • Thenia says:

Scarlett's story continues and some of the loose threads from the previous book get tied, some forward progress is made and some actions taken that are bound to have consequences in the future. The story is engaging and I enjoyed listening to it. I look forward to the third book, Hunter's Trail.

  • Kayakrat says:

The character develops in this book, which is nice, because helpless protagonists that just happen to save the day aren't really my thing. At least here, Scarlett begins to come into her own. Well paced, enjoyable.

  • Sarah says:

Melissa F Olson did it again. Trail of the Dead is just as good as Dead Spots. The battle between good and evil is so entertaining in these two books. The introduction of new characters were weaved in nicely with the old.Kudos on job well done.

Strong Second Book in an Entertaining SeriesIt's good to be home again. For about five seconds, anyway. She's fresh off a plane and back in LA after a long trip to New York, but magic null and Old World cleaner Scarlett Bernard doesn't even make it out of the airport before LAPD Detective Jesse Cruz is dropping a new case in her lap and glaring at her like she caused it all. Dragging her out to the crime scene, questioning her as if she hadn't just gotten back in the state, the gorgeous detective [...]

Another "fun" readwhen overused descriptions weren't driving me bonkers anyway I've liked book 1 and 2 about the same as far as story is concerned. Good but not earth shattering. This 2nd book, however, seemed to really recycle descriptions more than the 1st (or maybe I just didn't pay as much attention to it in the 1st as I was still getting to know the characters and staying distracted, who knows). If I read one more "wince," "flinch" or "eyeroll" I was about to start acting them out as approp [...]

  • Nicole says:

This is a pass the time type of series. As a reader, I feel as though in a way I am a knowledge seeker. So, when I read stories that have characters that seem to choose to be ignorant it bugs me. I may be over analyzing. What really grinds my gears about this series so far is that the main character deals in covering up crimes for individuals that are above the normal human standard. According to her, the only thing she does is run to keep in shape that way in case she would ever have to run awa [...]

Scarlett Bernard has to face the killer of her parents, and former mentor, Olivia. Once a null, Olivia is now a vampire and she wants Scarlett. So Olivia joins forces with a witch to gather the magic they need and leave a path of death in their wake. Scarlett know this has something to do with her and she is not going to let any more innocents die if she can help it.This is turning out to be a really fun series. Scarlett is just snarky enough to get a laugh yet the story is dark and dangerous. I [...]
